Midjourney glossary

Plain-English definitions of the Midjourney terms and parameters creators use every day, plus the Dreamdrive features built around them.

Prompt
The text description Midjourney turns into images. A strong prompt names the subject, composition, style, lighting and environment, followed by any parameters.
Parameter
An option added to the end of a Midjourney prompt, written with two dashes, such as --ar 16:9. Parameters change how an image is generated without changing the description.
Aspect ratio (--ar)
The width-to-height ratio of the image, for example --ar 16:9 for widescreen or --ar 4:5 for an Instagram portrait post.
Stylize (--stylize, --s)
Controls how strongly Midjourney applies its own default aesthetic. Low values follow your words more literally; high values are more artistic.
Chaos (--chaos, --c)
Controls how different the images in a single grid are from one another. Higher chaos gives more varied, less predictable results.
Weird (--weird, --w)
Pushes results toward unusual, unconventional aesthetics. Useful for experimental looks.
Seed (--seed)
The number Midjourney uses as the starting point for an image. Reusing a seed with the same prompt and settings gives more repeatable results.
No (--no)
A negative prompt: tells Midjourney what to leave out, for example --no text, watermark.
Style raw (--style raw)
Reduces Midjourney's default beautification so results follow the prompt more literally. Popular for photography and precise art direction.
Style reference (--sref)
Transfers the visual style of a reference image or style code (colour, texture, lighting, mood) to a new image without copying its content.
Style code
A number used with --sref, such as --sref 2980181076, that stands for a particular look. Style codes are easy to save, share and reuse for consistent series.
Style weight (--sw)
Sets how strongly a --sref style reference influences the image. Lower is subtle; higher pushes the image closer to the reference style.
Image prompt
An image URL placed at the start of a prompt. Unlike --sref, an image prompt influences both the content and the style of the result.
Image weight (--iw)
Sets how much an image prompt matters relative to the text prompt.
Version (--v)
Chooses which Midjourney model version generates the image. Results, parameter ranges and style codes can differ between versions.
Niji (--niji)
A Midjourney model tuned for anime and illustrative styles.
Tile (--tile)
Generates images that repeat seamlessly, for patterns, textures and wallpapers.
Personalization (--p)
Applies your personal aesthetic, which Midjourney learns from images you rate or like, to a prompt.
Upscale
Increases an image's resolution and detail after generation.
Vary (Subtle / Strong)
Creates new variations of an existing image, either close to the original (Subtle) or more different (Strong).
